The new version of adamjustkidding.com is up RIGHT NOW!
I’m very excited to have a significantly more “visual” portfolio, afterall, I do claim to be a visual artist. There’s a lot of new work, and a lot of old work that’s never been properly documented.
Let me know if anything seems out of place, and let me know what you think!

One thing I’m looking at with my new website is experimenting with my pencils! In October or so I got a couple hundred of these pencils made up (another step in my personal battle against business cards, though I have those too), and while I’ve given out a good number of them, and use them all the time, I haven’t really explored what I can do with them. Expect to see more of these in the near future! In the meantime, here’s a… ribcage?

Joseph has all kinds of rules about his collage work. All of the images have to be cut from magazines, for example, and given that he is in the midst of creating a body of consistent work towards his MFA thesis, his work tends to follow more specific themes.
Personally, I like mixed-media collage a lot, like this piece by Lizzy Janssen, which combines different elements like watercolour, pencil, cut paper, and more. It also feels juuuusssssst riiiiiiggghhht for summertime, which it’s finally starting to feel like, after some inconsistent weather here in Baltimore.

I recently visited my friend Joseph Faura’s studio, where he was experimenting with projected transparencies as a variation on his collage style for an upcoming event he’s hosting (A small “full moon celebration” event in Baltimore this Thursday).
I really like Joseph’s work, and his use of the old-school projector makes me want to do more with them. I’ve used projectors and projected images in the past, but I think I might want to go out and buy one… he got a couple for $20 each at a surplus store! I’m also moving into a new house soon, and the additional space should lend itself to new projects and new kinds of work. I’m feeling very inspired and very excited!

Maybe the oldest piece of work in my current portfolio, this was a website design I did for an Australian photographer back in 2005, using scanned images of all the various press and photo passes he had. I also used this design as part of my application portfolio to get into the Visual Arts program at UMBC… it’s hard to believe how much time has passed since!

I posted a tease over a month ago, but here’s the final piece: Accumulation / Temporary Occupations accompanying zine for Jaimes Mayhew’s MFA thesis project.
The design direction was meant to be very “DIY,” and the installation itself used marquee letters, which is where the basis for the type treatment came from. The actual design elements are from vintage advertisements and a concept sketch done by Mark Durant during Jaimes’ conception of his project.
It was an absolute pleasure to work with Jaimes, a (currently) Baltimore-based artist who I have respected for some time now.

Additional documentation of this piece will be available once my new site launches!

I’ve got some things in the works right now, and I’m definitely not dead. There’s some new bits & pieces on flickr and the rest is on it’s way soon. Looking forward to having a new site soon, I can’t wait to share it!
